Big Tree Campervans is delighted to sponsor Maddy for the second year. We are impressed with her determination as a young athlete and success in her field; she has been selected to compete for Great Britain. We hope she continues to enjoy canoeing and improve in the sport.
I am a 17 year old canoe slalom athlete with a passion for paddling. I’ve been kayaking for seven years on rivers all around Britain ever since I started at an introductory Easter camp run by Breadalbane Canoe Club.
I train eleven times a week on the river, in the gym and out and about the countryside. Despite the continuity of my training it never gets dull, conditions are forever changing with rain, wind and occasionally sun which presents a different atmosphere and river level each day – perfect to get out on the river and rip up the waves on a challenging slalom course.
I compete for the Scottish Canoe Association and am on their performance squad, competing at the highest level in the UK in canoe slalom against incredibly close competition.
April 2016 held the Junior and Under 23 GB team trials on the 2012 Olympic course in Lee Valley, London, and despite the race not going quite how I had planned, on my very last chance to qualify for the Junior GB team I was successful in winning amongst the juniors and claiming the third and final spot on the team.
This means that I will be representing Great Britain at the Junior European Championships this August in Solkan, Slovenia.
Future goals.. ?
Unknown to the international field of competition, I have no expectations for this race at the European Championships but as my coach is always telling me I am only to focus on myself and my race- a good performance will deliver a good result.
Canoe slalom is a totally unpredictable sport where anything can happen. Next year I hope to qualify for the team again and after having more experience behind me from this year I would love to really challenge my international competitors.
Racing in all conditions
We train on land, too
